Why We Built This Site
We started PoweredUpReviews after spending weeks trying to find honest, independent generator reviews before a coastal move. Every site we found either had suspiciously glowing reviews of every product or was clearly just copying manufacturer specs into a list. Nobody was actually testing anything.
So we decided to do it ourselves. We buy every product at retail price — no review units, no manufacturer loans, no "sponsored by" relationships that could influence what we say. We run real tests with real loads and report what we actually measured, including when a product underperforms its marketing claims.
How We're Funded
We earn commissions through the Amazon Associates program. When you click a link on this site and buy something on Amazon, we receive a small percentage of the sale at no extra cost to you. This is how we pay for the products we test and keep the site running.
Our affiliate relationships never influence our editorial opinions. We recommend what we'd buy ourselves. When a product disappoints us, we say so — even if that means fewer commissions on that product. Our credibility with readers is worth more than any individual product recommendation.
Our Testing Process
Every product we review goes through a standardized test protocol. For portable power stations: capacity verification (measured vs rated), runtime tests at standardized load levels (100W, 300W, 500W, 1,000W), charge time measurement (0–80% and 0–100%), solar input testing when applicable, and real-world use across multiple households. For gas generators: load testing at 25%, 50%, and 75% capacity, runtime measurement, noise level measurement at 23 feet, and start reliability testing across multiple starts and ambient temperatures. Our Team
We're a small team of home improvement enthusiasts and emergency preparedness advocates based in the southeastern US — a region that gives us ample real-world experience with extended power outages. We've collectively experienced outages ranging from a few hours to 11 days following major storms, which is what made this subject genuinely important to us personally.
